ChatGPT finally talks like a person, and it works while you talk

Hook

Interrupt it mid-sentence and it stops, listens, and adjusts, because it was listening the whole time it was talking.

The news

OpenAI replaced ChatGPT's old voice mode with GPT-Live on July 8 (our full explainer): full-duplex voice models that speak and listen at the same time, so you can cut in naturally and it can run live translation. GPT-Live-1 is the default on paid plans, a mini version covers the free tier, and it's live on iOS, Android, and web. On July 23 voice landed in the desktop app: hit a hotkey, talk through what you need, and ChatGPT starts moving several tasks forward while you keep working. This month it picked up file uploads and Projects support mid-conversation.

On your desk

The old voice mode was a walkie-talkie: you talk, wait, it talks, you wait. Full-duplex is a phone call. Once voice stops feeling like a walkie-talkie, it becomes the fastest way to hand work to an AI, because pretty much everyone talks faster than they type. The desktop hotkey is the part worth your attention: dictating a brief while you're in a spreadsheet, telling it to prep the 2pm while you finish the 1pm. The CEO patterns are in voice mode for CEOs.

What you should do next

Set the voice hotkey in the ChatGPT desktop app and delegate the next thing you'd normally type; interrupt it rudely at least once, since that's the feature.
